Frequently asked Questions
Q: Do I need a cellular phone account with my local cellular company to be able to use the Guardcom system?
A: No the cellullar alarm data service is included in the monthly monitoring fee.

Q: Can I use the Radioguard transmitter to make phone calls or send text messages?
A: No. The cellular transmitter is only capable of sending and receiving alarm data.

Q: How long is your monitoring contract for?
A: When you purchase a system your must prepay for 3 months of monitoring service. You can cancel anytime after that.

Q: Sometimes when I use my cell phone when driving, the signal drops in and out. How can I rely on a cellular connection?
A: There might be times when you are using a hand held cellular phone while walking or driving, that you may get a brief loss of signal, that is because you are a moving target. The Guardcom unit will not be moving, and will not be subject to the same fluctuations in signal strength.

Q: I want a system that I can turn on when I am in the house, with all of the doors and windows protected. Can I have that type of protection with your system?
A: The most popular configuration of the Guardcom system is a system that uses infrared motion detectors for simplicity and reliability. However, the Radioguard unit is a 24 zone system and we offer door and window sensors that you can install fairly easily using double stick tape or screws. Wireless Glass Break sensors are also available.

Q: What is the coverage area of the infrared motion detectors?
A: An area approximately 50 feet long by 45 feet wide.

Q: What is the best place to put the infrared motion detectors?
A: Look at your premise and decide where the valuable items are located, and where the vulnerable points of entry are located. Then think about where the like traffic pattern area where the burglar will walk by are located. For example in a small cape home, your may decide to place a motion detector on the outside wall in dining room that looks into the kitchen and also covers the rear entry door into the kitchen. A second motion detector may be placed in the front living room that covers the front entry door, and the bottom of the stairway that leads to the second floor. A good mounting height of the infrared detectors is 6 to 8 feet above the floor. Avoid placing the detectors in an area that will be looking directly into a stove, fireplace, of fan. Avoid placing a detector in a area that looks directly at an outside window.

Q: What if I have pets? Will my dog or cat trip the alarm.?
A: We use motion detectors that are pet immune for pets up to 40lbs. That said, if your have a large number of dogs or cats in your home, or a large dog over 40 lbs., there is a good chance that at some point the pets may cause a false alarm. There are several solutions. First, keep the pets out of the protected areas. The detectors cannot see through walls or doors. The motion detectors can be mounted upside down at a height waist high, or a height just above the tallest pet. This will leave an unprotected area under the detector for the pets to roam. You can order a system with door and windows sensors instead of motion detectors.

Q:How long to the batteries in the sensors last?
A: Two to three years. The replacement batteries are available at locations such as Best Buy, Radio Shack, and online.

Q: How often do burglars cut telephone lines?
A: Burglars have been doing this for a very long time. See the story on the About Us page that tells about a group of burglars that were cutting phone lines back in the early 1970's. It happens because burglars have two choices. (1) don't cut the phone line and then get caught by the police and get sent to prison, or (2) cut the phone line to defeat an alarm dialer, and get away with the loot without getting caught.

Q: Can Smoke detectors be added to the system?
A: Yes we offer smoke detectors which can be added to systems used in single family dwellings. The building code in most states also require that 110 AC smoke detectors be installed when a new home is built. Our smoke detectors are not approved for multi family homes or any comical buildings. Those locations are subject to the national fire codes, which are very strict with many requirements.

Q:What types of payment do you accept?
A: Visa, MasterCard, Pay Pal (verified), certified and personal checks. (Checks may take up to 2 weeks to clear).

Q: The Guardcom system has a wireless keychain key that turns the system off and on. Are there any other options to arm and disarm the system such as keypads?
A: Yes, we have a small portable keypad and a talking keypad. The portable keypad is great to allow access to friends or a cleaning person who may have to occasionally enter the home. The talking keypad is our most popular option. When you arm the system, the keypad will say "armed away". When you turn the system off, the keypad will say "disarmed". We highly recommend this keypad for commercial locations where several employees will be using the system. It is extremely easy to use. Also, you can program a master code number into the system. Using the master code, the owner or manager can enter up to five additional codes for employees. Manangement can easily delete a code or change the code if an employee quits or is dismissed.

Q: Can I cancel service for a few months, and then resume service later?
A: Yes. After the first 3 months of service you can cancel anytime for any reason. For security reasons, we require a cancellation letter by mail or fax. If you cancel service, and later resume service, there is a $45.00 setup fee. We will send you an updated monitoring contract to sign. There is no commitment with the new contract. You can cancel again anytime. It will take 2 to 3 working days to reprogram your account into our system after we receive the signed new contract and setup fee payment.
